As the US Open Tennis 2010 approaches, uncertainty rules in the women’s singles. Several top seeds are sidelined with injuries, such as Serena Williams’ recovery from foot surgery that led to speculation about the younger Williams sister may not be fit enough to compete in the US Open tennis championship.
In addition, the right elbow injury suffered by Justin Henin when she fell at Wimbledon has caused her absence at the US Open. The pain and suffering most likely will extend to Venus Williams who pulled out of both Cincinnati and Montreal due to issue with her left knee, which has also prevented her from practicing. Russia’s Maria Sharapova who competed with Kim Clijsters in the finals in Cincinnati pulled out of the Rogers Cup after twisting her ankle during the match.
Injury plagued top women tennis stars has caused a clear favorite for this year’s US Open tennis champion to be shrouded in doubt, even though the odds still seem to favor the younger Williams sister. However, it’s still very questionable if she can notch another New York win. Many are skeptical about Venus’s knee injury, they speculate that she’ll easily knock down the lower ranking competitors without a twinge of pain, but when the competition begins to heat up and Venus is challenged by tougher tennis players, her knee pain will become prevalent as to why she’s having a rough time beating them.
