Marco Island is a beautiful beach town were people come and find the true meaning of relaxation and rejuvenation. Setting one self up on the sandy beach, with an umbrella and refreshing beverage is the first things most people do after they have checked into their room at one of the hotels Marco Island has become known for. Sifting through the sand for sea shells and building sand castles makes a great easy going activity for the kids to enjoy. After a day or two of true rest people start to get curious about the area they are in. This is when it is time to get out and grab a tour and experience all that Marco Island has to offer.
If you’re on Marco Island you are on the edge of the Everglades. You have access to some of the unique terrain that makes Florida stand out. Check out Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve to learn more about the environment. They have a good collection of some of the wild life and fauna set up on in wonderful displays to teach and entertain all who visit. This is a major research center and they have so much information on the Everglades and marine life. The exhibits are a great way to see some of the local wild life up close so when you do get out into the water ways you will know what to look for.
Not far from Marco Island there is the Briggs Nature Center run by the Conservancy of Southwest Florida which is another wonderful place to take part in nature. They offer up some adventures of the local terrain and water. They can take you on a canoe paddle through the water channels and guided walking tours of the mini islands. Go on a fossil dig, take a walk through the wild flowers, explore the everglades and then connect with the locals in the area and see what the artists are up to. They have a ticket to the local art studios.
